The following are brief overviews of goal-oriented modalities our therapists use for pain relief. This list is not extensive.
Counter-Strain Counter-Strain interrupts the biofeedback loop of the neuromuscular system. Developed by a doctor in the early 20th century and finessed over the next 60 years, Counter-Strain is highly effective for areas of the body that have experience physical trauma such as intense training for sports, birth, vehicle collisions, etc. Once a tender point is located, the muscle is shortened while the client stays relaxed. Then, the therapist holds the 'counter-stretch' for 90 seconds before returning that muscle to its normal resting location. This process resets the neuromuscular feedback loop, allowing the tender point within the muscle to relax. Ultimately, with Counter-Strain the therapist resets the body so the client's body can discontinue painful holding patterns and heal itself.
Fascial Stripping Fascia is the connective tissue that runs throughout the body. Most familiarly observed when preparing chicken for dinner. It is the tough, white, sheeting that runs over muscles and bones. When the body experiences micro or macro tearing of muscles, and by extension fascia, it does it's best to repair but, frequently doesn't have the capability to return the injured area to its prior state. Fascial stripping moves, rolls, stretches fascia. This breaks up areas that are stuck together from injury, a new fitness regimen, birth, repetitive strain, or surgery. Fascial stripping can decompress hypersensitive areas and areas that have become 'numb' due to compressed muscular nerves.
PNF Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is an active muscle therapy useful for those with stress headaches and athletes. When utilized consistently the body's range of motion is enhanced and muscles that 'stay tight' can be released. PNF uses stretches and reciprocal inhibition for muscular release. Meaning, the therapist initiates a stretch, the client the provides opposing force, both parties release, and when the stretch is attempted a second time the neuromuscular inhibition is less, leading to a deeper, less painful stretch. This modality is not mean to be used in pre-event massage but, should be a regular part of maintenance sessions.
Reflexology Reflexology is the gentlest modality we offer. It is especially beneficial to those experiencing a fibromyalgia episode. The hands or feet are manipulated with respect to zone correlation. Meaning, areas of the feet and hands are said to match areas of the body. When specific holds and presses are applied, a physical change can be manifested in the related region of the body. This modality is unique in that organs can be accessed.
Craniosacral Craniosacral uses light, almost non-perceivable movements on the skull/spine/sacrum that can impact the central nervous system. This has physical AND psychological impacts. It’s great for those who suffer from PTSD, Alzheimer’s, headaches, chronic neck &back pain or have given birth.
